According to reports, firefighters were seen to have “pulled the roof” next to a building near the theater.

Melanie Bonner, who worked in a nearby pharmacy, told Southend Echo: “The police were keeping people away. There were a lot of people to take pictures. The pure black smoke was high.

“It started at 3 o’clock and the firefighters arrived in about half an hour.

“You can only smell the smoke. Firefighters were pulling the roof on fire.”

Freya Miller added: “There were just a lot of smoke and they were all hazy outside. Stunk, just a bad burning smell.

“We had some customers, but they all left to see what happened.”
