On Thursday, July 3, 2025, the Supreme Court of Calcutta directed the Western Bengal government to put union rooms on colleges and universities where there was no recently known student organ or no elections.
The direction of a chapter bench under the chairmanship of Soumen Sen, under the chairmanship of Soumen Sen, came to heard a petition of a public interest (PIL) after the allegations of rape rape by a Legal College student in Kolkata last week. However, the Supreme Court added that the Southern Calcutta Legal College (where allegations of sexual assault) should be accessible by the investigation agency up to more orders. The court also added that the Southern Calcutta Legal College should not be affected by the academic intentions of the college students and that the college should continue to work regularly as soon as possible.
Four people, including a former student leader Monojit Mishra, a former student leader associated with the trinamool congress Chhatra Parishad, were arrested in connection with the attack. Three people were arrested for rape, kidnapping and incorrect imprisonment, while the police arrested the security guard of the college.
Hearing another PIL petition opened in connection with the sexual assault of the student, the bench asked a response from the legal college and the state administration on how such a crime would be on a university campus. The court said that the surviving lawyer received all the necessary support from SIT (Special Investigation Team) created by the Calcutta police to investigate the incident.
The Court also warned that the identity of the survivors should not be preserved and explained under any circumstances and asked the government government to make appropriate complaints if he made any attempt to confuse the identity of the victim on all media houses and social media ”.
The counter also said that “several female students from the same college are shown in various channels and social media, which will create the impression that the woman will be a victim”.
