Political ‘Age of Anger’ necessary to combat new approaches, proposes the US work | Psychology

Researchers, people’s efforts to reduce the hostility towards rival political parties can lead to small changes – but such effects are largely evaporating within two weeks.

The team behind the work, which investigates the effect of interventions ranging from correcting the common misunderstandings of the other side to the contact between political opponents, shows that some of the results are necessary to address the “Age Age”.

“There is no magical correction for our political divisions, Prof Sean Westwood, a joint writer of the research of Dartmouth College in the United States, said. Iz In order to rebuild our democracy, we must undertake the process of supporting policy -oriented candidates, resisting hate on social media and recovering the integrity of our federal government, ”he said. “This sounds hard and so, but we’ve done it before.”

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of SciencesResearchers in the United States report how they analyze 25 previously published US -oriented works, which investigate 77 different approaches to reduce the hostility of partisan.

On average between all interventions and participants, researchers found that such approaches increased the temperature against the competitor political party on a scale of 101 points by 5.4 points.

However, they say that it is only a modest change, such as the belief that it is smaller than the fluctuations seen in relatively short time intervals among the general people, and the belief in support for democratic norms that will not be expected to affect attitudes and behaviors.

The researchers also looked at 20 interventions with follow -up data, and found that 75% of the reduction in hostility disappeared after a week and almost all of them disappeared within two weeks.

In addition, the team conducted an experiment to investigate whether it was exposed to more than one different interventions at the same time. However, the consequences of 2,284 participants in the United States claimed that the situation was not like this.

And an experiment containing 5,078 participants in the United States proposed to provide the same or different interventions at three different points over time.

Researchers said that a permanent decrease in the hostility of the study will probably require transition to approaches aimed at changing the incentives leading to the political and media “elites” that fans the flames of the Partisan conflict.

“Individual approaches are still valuable and can reduce tensions, but they will not solve the problem, Wood said Woodward, Woodward.

Prof Kurt Gray, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, who was not involved in the work but examined the ways to reduce polarization, said that the results are logical and that it was difficult to add emotions to political parties when hyperpolarized, including the clues of the social environment – the social media and the social media.

However, he said that base approaches could still be value.

“Our work and other studies show that it is important to put the change of permanent connections with the people in the corridor,” he said. “And they can only allow individual conversations.”
