Mahbia College in need of urgent restoration

Haydarabad: For the government Mahbia Junior College, Hundreds of Girls Students in Gunfoundry, joining classes have become risky due to rainwater leaks, damp walls and falling plaster. The college, the sixth order, Mahbub Ali Khan was once built in a secondary heritage building built in the early 1900s. The building is now disintegrated due to continuous water leakage and lack of maintenance and restoration work.

With the heavy rains that pollute the city in the last few days, the parts of the ceiling began to peel. Gypsum has approached students in class and corridors in a dangerous way. Since rusty beams can be clearly seen in many classes and other fields, the structural stability of the building is threatened.

Approximately 850 students are struggling to attend classes. After each torrential rainfall, the walls, floors and benches on the first floor with 19 classes remain inundated. Fixed moisture has caused moist walls, vegetation and roots grow from cracks in various places. “The walls in the Chemical Laboratory are completely humid and the roots came in. We are afraid of the walls and the ceiling can collapse at any time. We are afraid of our security when attending classes twice a week.”

Secondary students, water leakage problem has worsening compared to previous years, he said. “Last year, the leak was bad; now worse. Even small plants are growing on the walls due to ideal growth conditions,” he said. Faculty members said that they felt helpless because there was no alternative arrangement to change students. A lecturer said, “We cannot take combined lessons because the students are from different lessons,” he said.

Built with Granite, the building has hosted the Mahbia School since 1910. Later in 1974, a young college added. Another lecturer said, “Recently, the plaster has fallen off the ceiling, but no one has been hurt. In order to prevent further structural damage, repair work is required. The historical building must continue economically weakly.”

However, a middle department official rejected any water leakage problem stating that the repair work was performed only a year ago.
